Why do you use leather?

Leather truly is a one-of-a-kind material. It’s both strong and soft; it can breathe as well as insulate, it can stretch, but will not tear. Furthermore, leather is a by-product from the meat and dairy industry, which otherwise would be wasted if not put to good use. With such diverse characteristics, it is no wonder leather crafting can be traced back to the dawn of human history. Today, leather is still used in a wide variety of products from personal accessories and home goods to industrial use. While there are many different types of leather, we use mostly cowhide.

What does "full-grain leather" mean?

Full-grain leather refers to hides that have not been sanded, buffed, or snuffed (as opposed to top-grain or corrected leather) to remove imperfections (or natural marks) on the surface of the hide. The natural grain texture remains, allowing the maximum fiber strength and durability. Rather than wearing out, it will develop a patina over time. High quality leather furniture and footwear are often made from full-grain leather.

What is "veg-tan leather?

Leathers which have been tanned with vegetable materials that are derived from certain plants and woods, often called bark tannins.

What type of insert comes with my pillow?

It is a fluffy blend of down and feather with a cotton ticking cover.

What type of dye do you use?

We use dyes, not paint, to create our work, which penetrate the surface of the leather for ingrained color. All leather gets sealed with a clear finish that protects the surface against general wear and tear.

How should I care for my rug and tile?

Don't let their beauty fool you, these products are tough and durable. Rugs are meant to be stepped on, not over. With normal use, our leather requires little care and for basic cleaning, simply dust with a dry cloth. Do not use polish or harsh cleaners. If a spill or spot should occur, blot immediately with a clean absorbent cloth or sponge - no wiping or scrubbing. Then let air dry completely. Do not use a hair dryer or place near a heater to dry. Gentle leather conditioners or cleaners may be used occasionally, but always perform a small test first, to check for any undesired color change. These items are meant to age beautifully and truly get better looking the more you use it.

Avoid exposure to direct sunlight as it might change or fade the color of your leather. This applies to rugs, upholstery, pillows and tiles. Avoid placing your rug right at the entrance from outdoors, to keep it looking its best over time.

For cleaning our cowhide and woven rugs, we recommend the use of suction vacuum cleaners only. Do not use beater bar vacuums, as they may damage the floor covering material.

The most important piece of advice when it comes to caring for your leather, is that each stain and leather combination is independent of one another and may require very specific advice. But we are here to help should the need arise!

How should I care for my pillow?

For leather surfaces, quickly absorb spills or excess liquid.  Blot clean with a soft cloth. Do not heat, let air dry. The insert may be easily removed through zipper closure and cleaned as per interior tag's instructions.

Why is the color of the rug different from the photos I have seen?

The natural beauty of leather means that no two piece are exactly alike. We add color and pattern by hand, embracing the integrity of the material. The artist's hand is inherent in everything we make, which distinguishes our piece as works of art. Lots dyed at different times may fluctuate in color and we celebrate this variation as an essential characteristic of our work. As you live with your AVO product, the leather will evolve. It will soften, caramelize and gain depth to reflect the way you use it. It grows even more beautiful with age.

Can you create a custom pattern for me?

Definitely! If you want a rug pattern and don’t see on the site, contact us to start the conversation.

Why is the outside shape of the Cowhide Rug I received different than the one photograph?

For cowhide rugs, each one is unique from the tannery and will have a slightly different shape and size.
